My skin has gone back and forth on whether its considered sensitive or combo. Right now? A little of both. During my teens it was acne-prone and I relied on a myriad of acne products to keep the spots away.As I went into my late twenties and continued on with that, it actually ended up hurting my skin and causing more acne to occur.  There is such thing as over-treating acne and I highly suggest if “it doesn’t go away” you seek the advice from a dermatologist.  It’s not about getting a ton of products that will kill acne, fight oil, and banish any blemish, but getting into a good simple skincare routine that protects and nourishes the skin to be at it healthiest.

Im currently thirty-two and now rotate between a very gentle cleansing wash, and a gentle exfoliating wash to cleanse my face.  I always follow with serum and moisturizer and occasionally a acne spot treatment.  All products I use at the moment are geared toward sensitive skin and for good reason.  I’m a stress ball!!! And what that means is because I’m always a big ball of stress my skin is constantly under attack –not from bacteria or dirt –but from myself.  Over the last few years I developed an auto-immune response to stress which causes ONLY the skin around my mouth to feel inflamed, dry and peel. No where else on my face. Just around my mouth. Stress-induced dermatitis…and it sucks.  Imagine feeling like you have a rash on your face at all times and there was no product that could make it go away.  I’ve gone to doctors. I’ve tried creams, cleansers and pills. It wont go away until stress goes away, and considering I don’t see that ending soon….I need to find ways to relieve it as much as possible. Go ahead and google perioral dermatisis and you’ll see what worse cases are dealing with.

Randomly, The Rosacea Treatment Clinic of Melbourne found me on the web.  They came across my previous posts about skincare and asked if I would like to do a review of their anti-inflammatory cleanser.  My response was a very quick yes after checking out their site.  I figured it couldn’t hurt to try and see if it helped calm the skin around my mouth, and I was sent a mix-yourself kit to test. The kit contained two brown glass bottles of a solution A and B to mix inside the airless pump bottle provided.  The packaging is very clean and simple and while I like a nice fancy bottle on my counter–if it works, that’s really all that matters, right? It’s not the packaging that is doing the work its whats inside that counts!

What I found out about this cleanser is that is contains no sulphates to dry the skin out, which is important for someone with sensitive, peeling skin.   It’s formula contains at least one third anti-inflammtories and antioxidants which potency will reduce after four months so there is a life-shelf on this product.  And that it contains ceramides to strengthen the skin from further irritation.  Oh, and one more thing, it controls dermodex….and I’ll let you google what THOSE ARE! yikes! ! ! ! **shivers ** hint below.

guess where I live?

I’ve used the cleanser almost daily for the past month and found that I could use it on wet or dry skin and always used two-three pumps.  I loved that my skin never felt dry or tight and that during the weeks when I used it soley the inflammation around my mouth had gone down (erythema and edema = swelling and redness).  Sometimes I will really massage my face with the air-foam cleanser before stepping into the shower to rinse.  It truly never irritated my skin or made anything worse!  I’d be curious about coupling this with their other products designed for sensitive skin/ rosacea., such as their Rosacea Anti-Inflammatory Clearing Serum which fights dark spots. They recommended facial waters/misters (such a La Roche Posay Thermal water) which reduce inflammation as well. Facial misters are A-W-E-S-O-M-E and I think everyone can enjoy those!

The Rosacea Treatment Clinic has a ton of information on sensitive skin including tips and recommendations for managing symptoms of this skin type.  You can purchase the made-to-order cleanser directly on their site for $55.00 which I think is a decent price for comfortable skin.  They also have a facebook page where they answer skin/care related questions to prospective buyers which means you can actually ASK someone about the product you are using pretty quickly.

  1. I like your writing, especially your opening paragraph. I am a dermatology nurse and a sufferer of rosacea. I like it when when people writing about skin refrain from talking a load of tosh and write something considered and intelligent. The gunk we put on our faces is driven by fragrance, packaging image and feel. I think it should be wholly driven by what is good for the skin and the particular conditions we suffer from.
Dr Katerina Steventon of Faceworks is another reliable writer and I recommend her work.
    Thank you for yours.
