Back in my teen years I really went to town with lightening my hair. It was what I thought looked great on me and I continued to do it into my mid-twenties until I did a flip flop and switched to a deep dark glossy brown. In all those years I’ve wanted to have a little fun and try a “fun” color but never had the guts to get it done. When I was in school I was either doing dance or cheer so it wasn’t allowed, and by the time I was a working adult, I was in an office and that wouldn’t fly either. So you can imagine how giddy I was when I saw Gouldylox post a photo sporting a hot pink ombre using Colorsmash Temporary Hair Color.

This was finally my moment to try something fun because at this point in my career it doesn’t matter what I do to my hair. In beauty blogging, you can do just about anything in the name of “research” and share it with your readers so they can either Yay or Nay a product for themselves.

Colorsmash is a spray on hair color so you don’t need to worry about ridiculously messy jars of color destroying your bathroom, and comes in three colors: pink, violet and indigo. The formula is iron-oxide free, and uses a nutrient rich dye to coat vibrant fun colors to strands of hair or a full head. Aloe vera extract, grapeseed, and avocado are just a few of the healthy hair ingredients found in each can. It also offers UV protection. Depending on the health of your hair it will last you anywhere from 1-3 days and washes out with regular shampoo easily.

What I did discover, and should have realized beforehand was that this IS a hairspray– so it does have hold. I thought it was just spray in color, but it has hold to it so you can use this in one of two ways. A finishing spray after you’ve styled your hair, or a spray in and brush out for a softer color application. You will get the spray on your hands when using it, but it easily washed off with soap and water and I draped my shoulders with my bath towel that I was going to throw in the wash next to protect my skin and shirt.

I have long medium-brown hair with some lightened ends from a balayage I had done a almost two years ago. I found that the blonder your hair is, the best the color will show.  It also lasted the longest on those parts of my hair (I suspect because they are the most porous, or damaged parts of my hair.

I attempted to do strands of multiple colors for a mermaid-ish look which took some time and my six month old was not having it anymore so my experimenting got cut short. I also did just blue strands in various parts of my hair because I liked that color the most after seeing pictures of the product used. And lastly, I tried using pink and purple on my ends for an ombre effect.

After much experimenting, I found that pink and purple showed up best on my hair.  I did a few layers where I would spray in the color, let it dry, then brush it out and spray it again repeating the process. I found that spraying both the top and underneath produced the best color, and that I was not a pro at doing an ombre.

I was able to sleep with the color in my hair and not destroy our bed sheets, and loved how the colors peeked out from underneath for just a little bit of fun. I love how I was able to experiment with something different but able to wash it out and go about my business as usual. I could see myself using this again when the mood strikes which could be just about anytime I do my hair! Being a work at home mom means a lot of messy buns and target trips, not so much dressing up and looking “ready” to go out until it’s the weekend when my husband is home.
