Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque

Is your skin feeling dry, dull, or just plain blah? As the seasons go through another change, I find my skin a little lackluster at times and craving some extra care, which is why I was so happy when I gave Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Mask a try.

To be honest, I’ve seen this product on the Dermalogica site for a while, and when I read the description that says it’s for stressed, aging skin and I just never really thought that was me. Well news flash to myself, that is ME, so it’s a good thing I gave it a try. Stress does not only mean the typical “I’m so stressed out” meaning, but can also include environmental stressors like pollutants in the air, or products we use, and even UV damage. So things that we typically come across in our day to day lives!

Their Multivitamin Power Recovery Mask is part of their Age Smart line which addresses aging triggers before they start. Wrinkles, uneven tone, hydration levels and hyperpigmentation are high priority skin issues for myself so I make sure to build myself a skincare routine that touches on each concern.

I use hyaluronic acid serums to hydrate, vitamin C products and retinoids to address uneven tone and laxity and richer, oil-based products to seal in moisture. But a good mask can make all the difference.

What’s In It

So what makes this an anti-aging powerhouse of a mask? Let’s take a look at some of the key ingredients it contains. Vitamins A, C, and E are in this mask, and for good reason — each one is a powerful antioxidant that helps skin in it’s own way. Vitamin A can help fight free radical damage, more specifically damage done by the sun, and so can Vitamin C. But Vitamin C is also well known for assisting in collagen production for more youthful, bouncy skin, and also works to brighten and minimize discoloration. Vitamin E is also known to work hard at reducing and repairing UV damage.

Linoleic Acid strengthens the skin barrier, and helps our skin hold onto moisture better. When the barrier is compromised, our skin can hurt and feel tender.  Because it helps our barrier become healthier, and aid in our natural exfoliation process, linoleic acid can also help with acne, keeping pores clearer.

Algae Extract helps our skin in a few ways. For one, it also helps strengthen the skin barrier, while lowering oxidative stress. It can also hydrate, soften and soothe stressed skin which is the perfect addition to this reparative mask. Algae extract can be pore-clogging for some, so it’s something to keep an eye on if you know this is an issue for you. I have a friend who avoids it in all her skincare, whereas I have no issues with it in several of my skincare products.

ProVitamin B5 (also known as panthenol) works as a humectant, drawing water into the layers of the skin keeping it moist and hydrated. By doing so, it also further strengthens the skin barrier, improving the touch and feel of your skin. It is said to be particularly good for those of us with dry, dehydrated skin, and delivers anti-inflammatory benefits when dealing with dermatitis. I’ve heard of this in haircare, but never in my skincare. I’m not questioning it because I’ve had good results with this product!

Sensory thoughts

The masque is a thick, tan cream that comes in a metallic plastic tube. I find it easy to dispense and don’t feel the need to go overboard with the product. A good single layer that you can see in the mirror will do the trick in just 10-15 minutes time. There was a little piece of paperwork inside the box that showed a Dermalogica aesthetician saying she liked to use it with her night cream overnight. I started doing that a couple times a week; I just add a pea sized amount to my nightly moisturizer and feel it gives my skin the extra boost I need while I sleep. My skin feels refreshed in the morning and has helped in minimizing irritation from retinoids and glycolics.

Final Thoughts

I feel a noticeable difference in the softness of my skin when I do a good full 15 minute application. My skin looks calm, hydrated and rejuvenated after wiping and rinsing away the product which is why I will continue to use this mixed with my night cream a 1-2 per week.

Sadly, I don’t see wrinkles vanishing anytime soon. Yet, that is something I wouldn’t expect. I have realistic expectations when using topical treatments.

There is a scent to this product. It’s not a fragrance, and looking at the ingredients I am unable to figure out what the smell is. It’s not overpowering, or bothersome — but it is noticeable to some. I forget all about it while using it, and only note it because I’m squeezing and smelling the product as I write this.

This product comes in two sizes, and I got the larger one which I can foresee can last quite some time with regular use. The price tag is on the high end of comparable masks I would buy (It costs $59 for the larger tube). That said, I would buy it again if something newer and better doesn’t come along. It does make me more interested in the entire Age Smart line and I plan to explore that a bit further as soon as I can.

Have you try this product? What are your thoughts? Dermalogica always makes quality products; and some are hit and miss for me; but this one is a hit in my book.

  • Realistic expectations are the best! Skincare can only do so much, but it does enough to help us look more rested and refreshed :)

  • I have enough skincare products to open my own store, but after reading your review, I think it would be beneficial for me to add this mask since it addresses so many of my skin issues. I love that you add it to your nighttime moisturizer a couple of nights a week. Very cool.
