Morrocan Inspired Clean Haircare from Mounia

I love how a good hair care product can feel like it transforms your hair. Sometimes just a small switch in the product can make hair feel so different boosting confidence with each hair flip to the left and right. Lucky for me, I feel fortunate for my hair care choices because my hair feels pretty fantastic most of the time, but recently I gave the clean beauty brand, Mounia a try and was very pleased with my experimenting.

Mounia was created based on Berber beauty traditions and ancient recipes that have been followed for years. One of those is the use of oils to keep hair nourished, healthy, and resilient. Mounia built on this and developed a cruelty-free, vegan, and color-safe hair care line to reduce brittleness, while increasing shine, volume, and strength.

The system is very simple and consists of a shampoo (rinse), conditioner (condition), and serum to repair the hair. Everything is housed in no-fuss, minimal packaging that put the focus on the quality of the product at the forefront. The bottles are plastic and recyclable, and the serum comes in a small glass dropper that can also be recycled.

The Rinse

The shampoo is clear and while it has no artificial fragrance, it does have a very faint hint of something in there. Let me stress the word, faint, because I have to stick my nose INSIDE the bottle in order for me to smell it, and it’s very hard for me to figure out what it is.

Mounia made it easy and designed their shampoo and conditioner for all hair types. It has an amino acid-rich organic aloe vera base instead of water and uses Rhassoul clay to help gently cleanse the hair and scalp while pomegranate oil offers hydration while reducing frizz.

The Condition

The conditioner from this brand is THICK. Not so much that the formula feels like body butter, but thick enough where the bottle choice might not be the best. It’s a thixotropic formula, meaning it can sit stiffly when undisturbed and won’t “spill” out of a bottle on its own, but if you scoop through with your finger it will move pretty fluid-like. Kind of like how mayonnaise acts! My hair feels very smooth after letting this sit for a few minutes and rinses away well.

Mounia conditioner uses organic cumin high in anti-inflammatories and omega-rich flaxseed oil to offer weightless hydration, while biotin strengthens each strand. Rosehip is also included within the formula, providing hair with vitamins A and E for nourishment.

The Serum

Have you ever used a hair serum that says to use two drops only? Seems impossible right? While I don’t douse my hair in oil, I usually need more than that — which is exactly what I ended up doing here.  Mounia har serum truly is different from most hair serums I have tried. I suspect the hair serum from the brand Seen may be similar but I haven’t tried it yet — just basing it on ingredient choice.

The serum uses squalane and NO silicones to smooth the hair. Because of this, it kind of feels like a dry oil and they recommend using less. I started out with very long hair and two drops weren’t going to cut it, so I stick to around 5 drops. The serum also includes argan oil, and prickly pear extract for their reparative qualities, and organic fig is used to scent the oil. I personally cannot smell anything at all and don’t mind.

Overall Thoughts

This is a great set I could see myself using again in the future. The shampoo rinses well without leaving my hair tangly. I do wish the conditioner would come in a different type of packaging, like a large squeezy tube so you can get every last drop. And their hair oil is top-notch. I’d say this is my favorite product of all three I tried. It’s never “too much” and offers just enough moisture and smoothing properties for this head of hair. I don’t think you NEED to buy this as a set, but I do like to use everything from one brand at a time

My hair is currently color-treated and gets a cut about every 5-6 months so you get an idea of the health of my hair. I would happily use this brand again should I come across it.

  • What a great set! I could completely see myself using it, and that serum is something I would definitely use a lot!

  • How interesting that it's based on Berber beauty traditions. I am curious to find out more about that. I believe I have heard about Mounia haircare, and it does sound very nice. Because I am using Vegamour and Olaplex for specific reasons, I would be most interested in trying your favorite of the three, the hair oil.

  • I’ve never tried using serums! I definitely need to get a boost!
