If you have not familiarized yourself with what a konjac sponge is, this is the perfect time to do so. Konjac sponges are used as facial and body cleansing tools and are made from a fibrous, sustainable plant called the jonjac potato. They are thought to help gently exfoliate and remove toxins and can sometimes have ingredients like charcoal or clay to help treat or cleanse the skin. I had the opportunity to try the La Lune Naturals charcoal konjac sponge in the past month and found that I preferred it over the plain konjac sponge I have used in the past.
The La Laune Naturals Charcoal Konjac Sponge looks the shape of half of a tennis or racketball and is gray in color. When you first get it the sponge feels a little too hard for skin use, but once you wet it, it gets soft and pliable to fit the curves and crevices of the face. The konjac sponge can be used without cleanser which is how I use it most of the time while in the shower, or you can add your favorite cleanser to it if you feel you need the added boost.
Because this was a charcoal version I really opted to use it mostly with just water and made small circular motions all over my face neck and chest to gently exfoliate on a daily basis. I did use it a few times with my cereve cleanser but I usually keep that at my sink instead of the shower.
What I really liked about this brand is that they include not one, but two sponges so you get to use the products for longer, and that they also include a little suction cup hook so you can actually hang the sponge in the shower instead of looking for places or using other valuable hook space. You don’t want this sponge sitting in the soap dish to dry because gross–it probably won’t dry, and my only other hook holds my shower poof and body mitt. I can’t hang it on the hot/cold handle of the water because it faces downward so this little added item makes a big difference to me.
I personally love the idea of including charcoal in the sponge. I have normal/combo skin that gets breakouts and while konjac is thought to detoxify on its own, I think charcoal helps draw out those toxins more. Konjac is also thought to pH balance the skin due to it’s alkaline properties.
You can purchase the La Lune Naturals Charcoal Konjac Sponge by visiting their website or by visiting Amazon. They also have a plain (non-charcoal) version if you don’t feel you need the added extras. Both currently retail for $14.99 which was about the price of a single sponge of another brand I was looking at.
La Lune also carries a variety of skincare products besides konjac sponges such as clay masks, essential oils, and kelp powder so you can mix your own masks and wraps for home use. I’ve tried clay masks before but never a kelp powder and I thought that looked interesting.
