This past weekend I was at Target and TRIED MY HARDEST to not spend on anything “extra”, but I failed. I failed because I made the mistake of walking through the beauty aisle and passed the ELF Cosmetics section that had a ton of clearance stickers on one product, their Sheer Slick Lipsticks. I haven’t paid too much attention to their products beyond the bite-sized palettes but these lipsticks are sheer so I thought I would give them a try. After all, they were only $1.50 – $2.50 each so what was the harm?
ELF Cosmetics in general is one of the more affordable brands you’re going to find out there. I remember back in the day when I worked in a dental lab and I would have my orders sent there instead of my apartment. I would do huge orders of just about everything because this was when almost all their products were still a $1, maybe $3 if it was a palette. Those were the days!
But in all honestly, I think ELF has made huge improvements in their products over the years. The quality rivals those on the shelves next to them for sometimes a significantly lower price!
The Sheer Slick Lipsticks come in eight shades, each promised to be sheer and shiny, with a subtle hint of color for the lips. I didn’t research the colors beforehand, I just figured I would grab what I could based on the display colors and hope for the best!
I like the slim lipstick design, and the colorful coordinated packaging is fun! I should also mention that the cap stays on well and secures with a click when closed — something important if it’s going to be rolling around in a purse later!
The formula looks to include some familiar ingredients like meadowfoam seed oil which is moisturizing and Vitamin E which is loaded with antioxidants.
The Sheer Slick Lipsticks glide on the lips smoothly and feel good on the lips. The shine is to my liking too. The pigment is much higher than I expected — to where I said, whoa, after the first swipe! If I could, I’d have all of these about 50% sheerer than they are. I like to pile on balms so for me to be cautious in my application means I get less of the moisturizing benefits of the lipstick because I’m tapping it on instead of laying down a couple of “layers”. I thought they would be very similar to the Pacifica Glow Stick Lip Oils seen here, but they aren’t.
The lipsticks do wear over the course of the day pretty easily, but I pretty much expect that with most lipsticks, glosses, and balms unless they are matte or liquid formulas. I still prefer to apply more often when I remember than bother with “long-lasting” lip products which most of the time dry my lips out!
I think for the clearance price these were a win. I think even full price I’d still be okay since it would be max $5 each and that’s still less than most lip products I own. I would suggest looking at color swatches before buying though so you can see that the colors are fairly similar and more opaque than you think!
You can purchase these on the ELF site and on Target.com but really, go look for them in your local store if you are reading this in the same month I posted it. I got these for $1.50 to $2.50 each which felt like a steal.
What do you think of the ELF Sheer Slick Lipsticks? Do you see a color you want to try?
I love love love your photos! So cute. And I definitely would like to try those balms. Your swatches look great!
thank you so much allison! I really enjoy the photography and styling part of blogging so it means a lot when others enjoy it too!
Wow, these are gorgeous, Claudia! Your pictures and swatches are stunning!
What a steal. I like the two cooler shades and would pick them up at that price. ELF has some great products (and like all brands a few misses too). With ELF lips I find that they turn eventually so be sure to use them.
What is the point in this post when you don’t even name the shades you’ve reviewed/swatched?
Thanks for your comment. The shades are listed in the video portion.
