Sometimes make-up can be extremely stubborn when it’s time to remove, and even some mineral sunscreen can use a little extra help, which is why I regularly use the double cleanse method to clean my skin as much as possible to avoid breakouts and dulling of the complexion. Usually, the biggest culprit is my mascara! I appreciate that it stays put, but I don’t appreciate that it likes to hang around after washing my face if I don’t use the double cleanse method.
Today, I wanted to share Dermalogica’s answer to double cleansing, their PreCleanse Balm, and Special Cleansing Gel. I’ve been using their PreCleanser on and off through the years but never realized they had a balm in addition to their oil pump version. The PreCleanse Balm includes a silicone nubby to help massage and break up product that’s on the skin which I was curious about. Would it actually help? Would it hurt my eyes? Let’s see!
The PreCleanse Balm
It’s cooling off in AZ, so the typical temps here range from 75-85 now. The first couple of times I tried using the PreCleanse Balm I had a hard time squeezing it out because it was in solid form. I’m used to scooping a slightly softer balm out of a tub so squeezing a tube seemed more hygienic, but more difficult. In the Summer I would imagine an oil spill the minute I flip that cap, so just be careful in warmer months. I now, massage the tube to warm it up with my hands and it comes out at a controllable speed.
The balm feels good on the skin and has a light scent to it. I don’t see fragrance listed, but I do see linalool and limonene which can be considered fragrance or flavoring on their own. Each has its benefits like contributing to the antibacterial properties of the product, ingredient absorption, and creating an uplifting scent, but they are also associated with sensitivity so please be aware if you have highly sensitive skin. This doesn’t bother my skin one bit and smells a bit lemon-y to me.
Their balm contains a botanical biolipid complex which has the job of keeping the skin moisturized without feeling stripped, and I can attest that it does leave my skin feeling comfortable. So does it work? Yes. Could I do without the lemony scent? Yes, I could and think more people would prefer it fragrance-free. Would I buy it? I tend to rely on Farmacy Green Clean more, but this will definitely stay in rotation.
I’m not sure how much the silicone mit helped, but I’ve been using it without issue. It’s not something to easily maneuver over the eyes when fingers can do a better job, but it did feel good on the skin! I think I prefer to use it with their Special Cleansing Gel more!
The Special Cleansing Gel
The special cleansing gel has been a staple for me for years. I had to stop initially when I moved to Arizona because I did feel like my skin when through a drying phase adjusting to the desert life. Now I can use it again! It’s a great soap-free foaming cleanser and is said to be for all skin types. I’m not sure I would use this if my skin was any drier, but it does do a fantastic job of doing a final cleansing of the skin. It contains balm mint and lavender extract to soothe the skin. I would never have guessed because I would think those things would add a fragrance to the product but it doesn’t. My husband can use this cleanser too, so it’s a good one for us to put in the shower so we can both use.
If you’re curious about the double cleanse method using Dermalogica products, you can usually find smaller sizes to trial with first, and I even came across this cute mini set that would be great as a small gift!. (available at ULTA )
