Healthy Hair, Healthy Planet with Spring & Vine

spring and vine shampoo bar review by iliketotalkblogRaise your hand if you visit Target at least once a week. I know I do, sometimes I end up there 2-3 times a week because I forget something on the list! Last week I got a chance to walk all through Target sans child (whoohoo!) and I got to really take my time walking through the beauty aisles and see what was new on the shelves. It a rare occasion when I can wander the aisles alone, but since I had just finished my time at the gym I didn’t have my kid in tow and I took advantage of the alone shopping time. So there I was, turning every new product over to read the packaging at the end caps when I started to do my beauty aisle rounds — it was then that my eyes caughtSpring and Vine Shampoo Bars.

I noticed them immediately because it was a totally new brand to me and it was eye level amongst the bottles of familiar brands. They had four different options of shampoo bars that not only were different scents but made for different targeted hair treatment options. I’ve tried my fair share of hair products and have learned that many have endless ingredient lists of which most I don’t even know what’s in them. What stood out about Spring & Vine was their short ingredient list that included things I recognize like shea butter, but also them mentioning that they have omitted synthetic fragrance — something I’ve learned in recent months that can be quite harmful to many unsuspecting people. If that doesn’t make you question your products, I don’t know what else will! As a mom, I have to think about these things more carefully and incorporate cleaner, natural products into our household, where I can, that still have the ability to do their job.

Each shampoo bar is made using only essential oils to provide a fresh scent that we all like to enjoy when washing our hair. I find the Oatmeal option to have no detectable scent while the lavender and Orange Blossom to be most fragrant to my nose.

Oatmeal – moisturizing

Tea Tree & Mint – cooling and clarifying

Grapefruit & Rosemary – adds volume and fullness

Lavender & Orange Blossom – balanced and calming

What’s nice about these bars is that they still lather just as well as a traditional shampoo in a bottle. I still enjoy working suds through my hair (and my daughter’s) to feel like it’s getting clean. There is also an added bonus to using a bar shampoo when you have a kid like mine. My daughter loves to go overboard with the shampoo and soap when I’m not looking and a bottle goes FAST! Shampoo bars can’t be wasted and last just as long as a traditional bottle of shampoo, and can work as a body soap in a pinch! While I enjoy the Grapefruit & Rosemary (volumizing), my daughter can use the moisturizing Oatmeal bar and my husband prefers a more invigorating option like the Tea Tree and Mint! Just make sure you have a little soap dish so your bar doesn’t stick to the tub and can dry easily!

Spring & Vine amplifies their efforts to being a responsible beauty brand not only by resisting the urge to use harmful chemicals in their products, but also use simple and minimal packaging that can be recycled. I think it’s pretty amazing that we now have brands that are more conscious of this and make an effort to reduce packaging waste where they can. We make a big point to recycle as much as we can in our household because even a smaller family of three has the ability to produce a lot of waste. If you take the time to sort your trash you will see a majority of it can be recycled!

While our family isn’t quite prepared to make radical changes like tiny house living, we do enjoy exploring options like Spring & Vine shampoo bars that are cruelty-free, eliminate potentially harmful chemicals, and focus on natural ingredients that I know work for my family.

Have you given shampoo bars a try? You can find Spring and Vine exclusively at Target.com and on their shelves in store!

  1. I’m not at Target like I used to be since I’m trying hard to be on a low buy. I’m glad to read though that the Oatmeal doesn’t have fragrance so that’s one I’d consider. I am having some issues with losing hair so I’m trying to use more natural products. Your photos are excellent.
