Colorsmash : Temporary Hair Color

colorsmash hair spray review by iliketotalkblogiliketotalkalot iliketotalkblog review

Back in my teen years I really went to town with lightening my hair. It was what I thought looked great on me and I continued to do it into my mid-twenties until I did a flip flop and switched to a deep dark glossy brown. In all those years I’ve wanted to have a little fun and try a “fun” color but never had the guts to get it done. When I was in school I was either doing dance or cheer so it wasn’t allowed, and by the time I was a working adult, I was in an office and that wouldn’t fly either. So you can imagine how giddy I was when I saw Gouldylox post a photo sporting a hot pink ombre using Colorsmash Temporary Hair Color.

This was finally my moment to try something fun because at this point in my career it doesn’t matter what I do to my hair. In beauty blogging, you can do just about anything in the name of “research” and share it with your readers so they can either Yay or Nay a product for themselves.

Colorsmash is a spray on hair color so you don’t need to worry about ridiculously messy jars of color destroying your bathroom, and comes in three colors: pink, violet and indigo. The formula is iron-oxide free, and uses a nutrient rich dye to coat vibrant fun colors to strands of hair or a full head. Aloe vera extract, grapeseed, and avocado are just a few of the healthy hair ingredients found in each can. It also offers UV protection. Depending on the health of your hair it will last you anywhere from 1-3 days and washes out with regular shampoo easily.

What I did discover, and should have realized beforehand was that this IS a hairspray– so it does have hold. I thought it was just spray in color, but it has hold to it so you can use this in one of two ways. A finishing spray after you’ve styled your hair, or a spray in and brush out for a softer color application. You will get the spray on your hands when using it, but it easily washed off with soap and water and I draped my shoulders with my bath towel that I was going to throw in the wash next to protect my skin and shirt.

I have long medium-brown hair with some lightened ends from a balayage I had done a almost two years ago. I found that the blonder your hair is, the best the color will show.  It also lasted the longest on those parts of my hair (I suspect because they are the most porous, or damaged parts of my hair.

I attempted to do strands of multiple colors for a mermaid-ish look which took some time and my six month old was not having it anymore so my experimenting got cut short. I also did just blue strands in various parts of my hair because I liked that color the most after seeing pictures of the product used. And lastly, I tried using pink and purple on my ends for an ombre effect.

After much experimenting, I found that pink and purple showed up best on my hair.  I did a few layers where I would spray in the color, let it dry, then brush it out and spray it again repeating the process. I found that spraying both the top and underneath produced the best color, and that I was not a pro at doing an ombre.

I was able to sleep with the color in my hair and not destroy our bed sheets, and loved how the colors peeked out from underneath for just a little bit of fun. I love how I was able to experiment with something different but able to wash it out and go about my business as usual. I could see myself using this again when the mood strikes which could be just about anytime I do my hair! Being a work at home mom means a lot of messy buns and target trips, not so much dressing up and looking “ready” to go out until it’s the weekend when my husband is home.

iliketotalkalot iliketotalkblog reviewIt has been a few months since I brought you up to date on J.F. Lazartigue Products and my next one helps to enhance the color of your hair.  JFL Colour Reflecting Conditioners can be used to enhance shine, and slightly change the tone of your hair.  There is no ammonia or peroxide to permanently change your hair color, but simply impart shine and deposits color for increased depth.

The process is real easy, its just like doing a deep conditioning of your hair right after the shower and can be applied for 5-30 minutes at a time.  A single tube lasted me at least 8-10 applications which is sufficient for even long hair like mine, and even gave me more applications than the drugstore brands that are supposed to do the same. The cream is thick which makes it easy to use and stays in place instead of running into your eyes and worrying about a stained forehead.

I chose Light Golden Chestnut for my brown hair.  I have natural highlights brought out by the california sun, but I do like to make my hair super shiny and darker colors have looked better on me in the past 10 years (used to be a bleach blonde!).

I typically used this about once every four-five days right at the end of my shower when it was wet but excess water was squeezed out. I did stick with shorter application time, usually around 5-10 minutes and still found that it slightly darkened my brunette hair – even to the point my fiance noticed it!

Be careful when using the conditioner because it will stain hands unless your scrub them clean right after. I would use some shampoo in my shower pouf and scrub my palms right after using. I would apply all over my hair  with my hands, comb it through, and then continue on with my shaving or whatever else with the water off giving it a good amount of time to do its thing. I would also twist up and pin it with a clip so my back wouldn’t stain also.

I love the freedom of a color enhancing conditioner because it’s temporary so there is no scary results to worry about, and it DOES leave your hair really really shiny. I find that the price is good for the amount of applications I got out of it compared to other brands that required me to use MORE and get less noticeable results.

J.F Lazartigue has a wide variety of colors to choose from for blondes, brunettes, red, silver, and black hair.  This color chart below (courtesy of Pretty Me Up!) shows you what color you should be looking for when trying it out.  Again, don’t try to go from blonde to brown with this, it is meant to enhance the color of your current hair, not drastically change it- nor can it take brunette hair to blonde.

If you’re looking for a quick color boost I highly suggest you check out the J.F.Lazartigue Colour Reflecting Conditioner!

[Review] Generation Klean Gray Disappear Hair Mascara

Generation Klean is a recently launched company that not only addresses your beauty concerns, but also looks out for your health. Believing that what we put on or in our bodies can have an overall effect on our health is not a new thing—however, founders JD Larson and Jasmine Abedi noticed that many of the products we use today are laden with toxic chemicals such as parabens, sulfates and other ingredients that have been linked to cancer. They knew there had to be another solution and set forth to create a product line that is embraced by dermatologists, skincare professionals and customers alike.

Using only pharmaceutical grade ingredients to give the best results possible, and the least amount of toxicity risk, Generation Kleans’ Gray Disappear claims to cover stubborn gray in hair shades ranging from blonde, red, brown and black. The colorant is encased in a mascara-wand type container and can be used in between visits to the salon for touch ups. And men? Don’t think they forgot about you and your needs. Is that beard getting a little salt n’ peppery for your taste? Generation Klean’s Gray Disappear works on mustache’s and beards too, and can be washed out easily with just a shampoo.

Gray Disappear is paraben-free, sulfate-free, PG(propylene glycol) free, and is rich with antioxidants, Vitamin E, and Panethol to condition the hair and skin. They are in the process of developing a larger line that will include cosmetics and body products. In just the short time that Gray Disappear has been introduced, it has garnered additional attention on the nationally syndicated talk show, “The Doctors”, “The Today Show”, and “America Now” with Leeza Gibbons, and I just got word they are gearing up for another appearance on Bethany Frankel’s show! Awesome!

I was offered a sample of the company’s product for my honest review. I requested blonde to try on someone who offered to model for me.

Because I don’t have gray hair myself, I decided to test it out on someone who did have gray roots and was willing to let me go wild with the stuff. One thing that both me and the tester noticed was that there was no scent coming from the tube which is nice because we all know what hair dye really smells like right? Ammonia and burning is how I can best describe it. Back in the day I was a bleach blonde, I know all about that smell.

I have to be honest I was a little skeptical that a little mascara wand would do some serious coverage. The gray was dark compared to the blonde and I didn’t understand how something just painted on would immediately lighten and cover it up. I began to comb the brush onto the top layer of hair at the root, near her parts. I even would do an under stroke so that the hair was covered on all sides. I tried not to go heavy and instead go for very fine layers of brushing with the mascara wand.

At one point we let it dry, and decided that I could add a little bit more and see how it would do. I did let her hair get a little bit saturated in some areas but I just blew some air and combed it with my fingers to help it dry.

I am pretty pleased with the results. It did cover the gray and help blend it a lot. It totally ended up blending with her hair when she fully brushed it out and re-did her part. I was updated with the results by the time I got home.

“After you left I combed through the now totally dry hair to change the middle pat to my usual mostly side-part. My hair wasn’t gummy or sticky and there was NO trace of obvious gray. Golden color matched my blonde hair perfectly.”

“After washing my hair the next morning, the gray was back so looks like it lasts about 24 hours or when you wash you hair. There was no residue left on my pillow though, so that was nice!”

In my opinion I thought it covered up the gray with blonde very well. It may not be something you can do every day, but I can see how it would help in between color visits giving you longer breaks between dye jobs. It didn’t take long to apply at all, and did the job well.
